Overview
Discover the soul of the Peloponnese in one unforgettable day.
Kalavrita, a beloved destination in the Peloponnese, sits gracefully at the foot of Mount Helmos. This mountain town enchants visitors year-round with its alpine charm — especially in winter when the ski center draws snow lovers from across Greece. Its cobbled alleys, stone-built homes, and cozy plane tree-shaded cafés evoke a slower, traditional rhythm of life.
A key highlight of Kalavrita is the legendary Odontotos Cogwheel Railway, in operation since 1896, running the 22 km stretch through the breathtaking Vouraikos Gorge between Kalavrita and Diakopto. This scenic journey is considered one of the most beautiful train rides in Europe.
Kalavrita’s history runs deep. Visitors can explore the Municipal Museum of the Kalavrita Holocaust and the Monument of the Executed, both commemorating the 1943 massacre of 1,200 men by Nazi forces. Just outside the town, the Monastery of Agia Lavra — founded in the 10th century — marks the site where the banner of the Greek Revolution was first raised in 1821.
Depending on group interests and seasonality, the tour may also include a visit to the Great Cave Monastery (Mega Spilaio), or the spectacular Cave of the Lakes, with its 13 cascading subterranean lakes and ethereal limestone formations.
This one-day journey is a rich blend of heritage, nature, and alpine beauty — ideal for cultural explorers, nature lovers, and anyone in search of Greece’s authentic heartland.
